New Amusement / Water Park Coming To Panama City Beach?

By Troy Steuwer | March 13, 2009

Yesterday, WMBB reported that Hutchinson Beach (a.k.a Middle Beach Road) in Panama City Beach could be getting a new amusement / water park. According to the report,  the Sterling companies bought the land in 2005 for $30 million. It’s 13 acres just east of Clara Avenue between Hutchinson and Front Beach Road. See map below.

Back when Sterling first bought the land, they rezoned it to “Accommodations and Retail.” Now, they are requesting the land be rezoned to “Amusements.” The company has already submitted a site development plan to the city and it included water slides, a wave pool, surf pool and the report said a ferris wheel or roller coaster could be potential attractions too.

Since the site is only about a half a mile from Shipwreck Water Park, competition will be fierce. However, Shipwreck Water Park GM, Buddy Wilkes, says he isn’t worried. He said, “We’re very comfortable with who we are and what we do here at Shipwreck Island and we’re prepared to compete with anybody.”

If the Panama City Beach City Council decides to let Sterling develop the land for a water park, our Mayor said it could be open by 2010; just in time for the new Bay County International Airport!

Tha last thing PCB needs is another water park! What it DOES need is a decent old-fashioned, beach type, Amusment Park.
While the Miracle Strip Park that closed wasn’t all that great…back in it’s early days it was a nice place full of fun for all ages.
While I am not expecting a Disney World something along the lines, and size of a Knotts Berry Farm would be wonderful!
