Florida Seeking Ways to Regulate Asbestos
By Joanie Miller | November 11, 2008
When seeking to remodel or purchase a home, there are many variables which should be considered. Homes built before 1980 have a strong chance of containing asbestos. Although Florida does not contain any naturally occurring asbestos, it still has found a way to most parts of the state, including Pensacola down to Key West.
Used as a method of home or building insulation, asbestos can cause a variety of health problems, including Peritoneal Mesothelioma and Malignant Mesothelioma. These forms of cancer develop when asbestos fibers are inhaled or ingested. Due to these fibers producing inflammation and scarring of tissue, it can evolve into a deadly form of cancer. Currently recognized as a regulated substance and a health hazard, the United States Environmental Protection Agency holds strict regulations in regards to asbestos.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection now espouses to an asbestos removal program. Their guidelines strictly prevent any release of asbestos related fibers from going airborne during construction, remodeling or building activities.
Asbestos removal in public facilities, homes and workplaces must be undertaken by a licensed asbestos abatement contractor. Once the removal is complete, green insulation options should be given serious consideration, such as: Cellulose, Cotton Fiber and Lcynene. Non-regulated asbestos material can be legally performed by homeowners, regular contractors, or licensed asbestos abatement contractors as long as the National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) are not violated.
