Are You Recycling?

By Joanie Miller | September 11, 2008

Recycling in Bay CountyI’m so impressed with the Panama City Rescue Mission taking on our new recycling facility in Panama City. No one but RedCo Recycling, a local paper and cardboard recycling company, has stepped up to the green plate to pick up recycle trash in our area. But thanks to the help of residents and broadcasters like WMBB News and The News Herald, the Rescue Mission has now signed up a whopping 2,500 families and businesses for their free curbside recycling.

WJHG reports that the Rescue Mission‘s goal for this year was 1,000 resident and business registrations. But with the incredible interest from our community, they’ve double that, and then some. Miller & Associates Realty has signed up with the Mission and has already started collecting our aluminum and plastic waste. We also have been recycling our white paper with RedCo for over a year now.

Recycling boxesSo what exactly are they recycling? Right now, you can visit their website and register your home or business to recycle any type of paper, whether it is colored, white, newspaper, magazine or a phone book. On top of that, they are also recycling cardboard, aluminum cans and plastic. Once registered with their site, someone from the Mission will contact you to set up a time for them to come to your home or office and explain what they are trying to achieve and how to properly dispose of your materials. When our office signed up, they gave us two large cardboard boxes (one for plastic and the other for aluminum) with plastic bags to cover the interior. They will either stop by weekly, bi-weekly,  monthly or bi-monthly. The choice is yours.

The recycling program is also aiding the homeless in Bay County by offering them jobs in picking up and sorting the recycled materials. So far this year, the program has picked up 10 tons of recycled paper, plastic and aluminum and the Mission is on track to register 10 more homes and businesses each and every day. Are you one of them? You should be! The Mission hopes to bring in about $200,000 each year.

Thanks to all the businesses including Regions Bank, The News Herald, WMBB News, Knology, Waste Management and Brock Pest Control for their sponsorships in this valuable program.
