Possible 25 Mile Artificial Reef in Panama City Beach
By Shirley Scruggs | September 6, 2008
PCBDaily reported that at a Tuesday commission meeting, plans of a 25 mile long artificial reef along Bay County may become a reality.
Mike Thomas suggested at the meeting of using debris from demolishing the downtown jail to create the new artificial reef. Located about eight miles from the shore and roughly 90 foot deep, the reef would most likely boost fish populations in the area and give divers an unprecedented new spot to explore.
I know that there are many artificial reefs made from steel and concrete around the United States, but, I personally don’t know of any other artificial reef this long. It would be interesting to see how it’s done. If you know of any created in this magnitude, please post the link below. I would love to see the progress it’s made!
For many, the term reef reminds us of crystal clear waters, bright colored fish and tropical coral. This is not what the reef will be come. Many fishermen call these “hard-bottom” areas. You can see an artificial reef in Panama City Beach by watching the video below. It’s amazing that with any object in the sea, fish migrate and start building large schools.
Looks like it’s time for me to get my divers license!
